10 Questions with Tilly Steele

Tell us one thing about you that the audience won’t already know.

I have a weird talent for being able to guess songs very quickly. You can play me 0.5 seconds of a song, and if I know the song, I’ll be able to recognise it almost instantly, especially if it’s nineties/naughties rock or pop. Those are my decades, I’d say. I can identify songs from that time pretty much immediately, like, in less than a second.

If you could swap lives with another NRB team member for a day, who would it be and what would you do?

I would just swap with Sullivan and be happy. He’s just such a happy man. I feel like that’s too obvious an answer though. Laurie… I don’t think I would like to be contained within his rage. Dom, definitely not. I don’t have it in me. I wouldn’t mind being Rosie. Actually, if I had to be someone else I’d be Blair. Yeah, I’d like to be Blair for the day and just play the bassoon and be American.

What’s been your favourite game to play on NRB and why?

I really enjoyed Good Face, Bad Face. I love a good bluffing game. I just love lying really. I really enjoyed Funemployed as well. I like a good pitching game. Generally, I’d say I like anything that’s rules-lite and performance-heavy.

If your personality was a board game, which one would it be and why?

It would be Fun Facts because I love asking people questions. I really love knowing the tiny details of people’s lives so it would probably be that.

If you could teleport any historical figure to the present to play a board game with, who would it be and what game would you choose?

Oh, I’d pick something completely ridiculous… I’d play Skull with Mary Shelley or something like that. Or Sylvia Path. Someone who would just be like, “What the hell is going on here?”

Do you have a board game guilty pleasure, something you love that might not be considered ‘high brow’ gaming?

There’s a game called Lost Cities. It’s very much a push-your-luck game, and I just love the gambling aspect of it. It’s not a board game, but at the moment I’m obsessed with Balatro. Yeah. I love a good push-your-luck game, love a good gambling game. It’s great!

Have you ever considered cheating at a board game, and if so what was your self-justification?

I don’t think I have, to be honest. I would know I’d cheated and that would kind of soured the whole experience for me. But I am a bad loser, a really bad loser, so in a way I cheat other people of the ability to enjoy themselves because I’ll be salty.

Who is the most competitive NRB team member?

It’s Dom, hands down. He’s competitive because he needs it. He really needs it. So, I guess you’ve got to cut him some slack. Jon is also very competitive but he hides it more, whereas Dom is just unashamed in how much he wants to win. If anyone has watched the Snake Oil video you’ll see just how much he wants to win.

If the NRB team members were ingredients in a recipe, what would each person be, and what dish would you be making?

If I was going to make a pizza, Laurie would be the dough that kind of holds us all together. Sullivan would be the cheese, not because he’s a particularly cheesy guy but because everyone likes cheese and everyone likes Sullivan. It makes sense. Dom would be spicy pepperoni because it’s exciting but it might hurt you. Blair and Holly would be some really nice vegetables because they’re good for you. I’d be olives because you either love me or you hate me.

What’s your favourite joke of all time and why?

Life itself is my favourite joke. The cosmic hilarity of life.
